What are Office Hours?

Office Hours are times at which you can meet with professors without having to make an appointment first. Each professor has between one and four office hours every week. To find out when they are, you can check the professor’s syllabus, or look on the announcement board in the CS department (4th Floor, Science Building).

Office Hours are meant to ask any questions of faculty members. They can be class-specific, regarding career development, related to administrative procedures for registration, advising, dropping or withdrawing classes, or about any other academic issues or concerns.

However, it is also important to know that (most) professors are NOT life coaches, therapists, or visa specialists. We do have many resources in place for people who are looking for that kind of support, and we’ll be happy to refer you to the appropriate people.

When Not To Use Office Hours

If you need forms signed, please leave them with our administrative assistant (Vikki in Science 413) and you will be able to pick them up the following day.

In addition to being a professor, I am the Chair of the Department of Mathematics and Computer Science. If you have concerns about the Department, our faculty or staff, or about other students, please make an appointment to meet with me.

During Office Hours, I need to divide my time between all students who attend; during appointments, you have my undivided attention.

Please note that I am mandatory reporter. That means that if you share information about (sexual) harassment, discrimination, self-harm, crimes, etc. with me, I am mandated to report that to campus authorities. Unfortunately, I am NOT able to keep such discussions confidential!

My Office Hours Policy

If you come to Office Hours, you must be prepared.

Please have specific questions or requests ready to go. Office Hours are not meant to be private lecture time if you missed class. However, I will be more than happy to assist you with materials you have studied and did not understand.

Why I am not doing this via video call (Zoom, Teams, Google Meet, etc.)?

In some circumstances, I will accommodate video calls. However, there is a lot of research that demonstrates that video calls do not support engagement, and engagement is a critical success factor for being an effective and successful student.

By making the effort to come to office hours during posted times, you are actively investing in your ability to learn and succeed. Since it is my job to support your learning and succes, my office hours are in-person only for students who take in-person classes. If preferred, I will take online appointments for students who take online classes only!
